The New iPhone OS 4.0 Features: Reality Vs Expectations

Friday, April 9th, 2010 by Mandy Lin

On April 8, Apple unveiled the new iPhone OS 4.0 finally. Until now, all rumors and expectations from users for iPhone OS 4.0 can be clear in front of the release of iPhone OS 4.0. There is acclaim, and there is also disappointment. As the saying that there is no perfect person, there is no perfect product to satisfy everybody, either. Whatever, this new iPhone OS has been near the perfect.

No flash still
Too many good news for iPhone OS 4.0, first let’s turn to the only frustrated one – no flash still. Flash supporting is highly appealed for before this new iPhone OS released, and this is one of the most important features that all iPhone users care about. Unfortunately, flash still doesn’t appear on iPhone along with iPhone OS update this time. When asked about it, Steve Jobs replied a flat “No” – he still seems dead against it.

Multitasking
Another most required feature is about multitasking, which is annoyed iPhone users for years that they can only perform one task at a time on their device. Thankfully, Apple doesn’t disappoint us this time, and bring it to iPhone with iPhone OS 4.0. You just need to double-tap the home button to bring up a dock of (admittedly, only four) running applications you can switch to while staying in another app. Moreover, according to Steve Jobs’ statement, this multitasking function doesn’t eat extra battery, which is really good.

Unified inbox
The unified inbox, coming with this new iPhone OS 4.0 as expected, it’s really another big benefit for users to choose iPhone. Check all your mails in one inbox without landing into all mailboxes with different usernames and passwords. This is a big step ahead. iPhone users can handle their emails for private and work at the same time. Well, not only will the messages appear in one central place, the conversations will now also be threaded, meaning you won’t have to hop in and out of emails to see what’s been said.

File folders
Instead of having 180 icons on your iPhone home screen, folders here give you the ability to hoard up to 2,000 apps on your iPhone. It’s more about organization than anything else – making it easier to group your applications into elements such as game apps, sports apps, utilities etc. The folders themselves will auto-name, or you also can call them what you like. This is really a good manager for your iPhone icons.

Social network integration

Along with the popularity of social network like Facebook, twitter and so on, social network integration is also eagerly expected. iPhone OS 4.0 brings it to our iPhone now. You can follow your friends easily on iPhone now.Game Center
iPhone OS 4.0 brings a new game center for iPhone users. On this new OS, game players can invite their friends to play together. There is ranking list for the game, and you can make a game appointment for next time. This new game center gathers all player around the world, which makes it rather strong.

iBooks
Book reader is the hottest point for iPad since its release. Just as many people expected, iBooks really appears on iPhone with iPhone OS 4.0. You can easily flip through the pages of a book you’ve downloaded from the iBookstore while listening to your music collection. Browse tens of thousands of books — many of them free — by title, author, or genre. You can even check out reviews and read sample pages before you buy. This is said the best way to browse, buy and read books.

iAd
This is also a feature talked before the new iPhone OS released. Apple will use it to promote its own advert business, resembling Google Advert. iAd supports HTML 5 technically, which will make the adverts appear for 30 min in different apps, 10 times on each device. There will be 1 billion times for the adverts’ appearance in total. Such an amazing feature.

Well, how do you think of these features of iPhone OS 4.0? Of course, these are only a few ones that this new iPhone OS presents us as to its 100+ new features and over 1500 new APIs for apps creation. As to the compatibility of iPhone OS 4.0, it only works with iPhone 3G, iPhone 3GS, and the second- and third-generation iPod touch this summer, and with iPad in the fall. Not all features are compatible with all devices. For example, multitasking is available only with iPhone 3GS and the third-generation iPod touch (32GB and 64GB models from late 2009).
